Touching the untouchable. *A riot broke out in Urumqi July 5, resulting in more turmoil over the following days, leaving at least 184 dead and more than 1600 injured, according to government figures. Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan has spoken out about the riots in Xinjiang. He condemns the violence and compared Chinas treatment of Uyghurs to genocide. "The martyrs of East Turkestan are our martyrs," Recep Tayyip Erdogan, then mayor of Istanbul, said in 1995 as he inaugurated a park named in honor of Isa Yusuf Alptekin, the Uyghur independence leader who had died in exile in Turkey. As Turkish Prime Pinister, Erdogan had long abandoned such sentiments, which were guaranteed to anger Beijing. However Erdogan has created a firestorm by comparing Chinas treatment of its Uyghur population Muslim Chinese of Turkic origin in the northwestern region of Xinjiang to "genocide". The Uyghurs of western China are an ethnic Turkic people who are by tradition Muslim, and who feel more kinship with the peoples of Central Asia than with the Han Chinese -- the communist state's dominant population. The Uyghurs are an ancient race who has made their mark on Eastern and Central Asian history.
